The South Wales Project
The South Wales Project has grown out of a series of ongoing conversations about the need to continue the work of the 'Valleys Project', a photographic scheme documenting the lives and topographies of South Wales communities in the 1980's and 90's.
The 'Valleys Project' covered many pivotal events in the area, most notable the Miner's Strike of 84/85, and it is this need to reflect contemporary events in an important moment in history that has bought five documentary photographers together.
Anna Jones, Rebecca Thomas, Dan Wood, Sion Marshall Waters and Jon Pountney joined forces late last year to fill the gap of photographers covering South Wales in a structured way; in time they will bring other creatives, writers and film-makers on board.
Challenges facing the area, above all Brexit, will be the inspiration and impetus behind their work; as their first project the five will collaborate on a photographic survey of the 'Heads of the Valleys' road, the A465, that crosses the area from Neath into England, north of Abergavenny.
